Let me quickly share 5 reasons why writing goals down can help you become more committed to your goals and actualize them.
Writing it will force you to clarify what you're going after. Imagine going out on a trip with no specific destination. What will you pack? Which roads do you take? How do you know if you arrived? You simply start by choosing a destination. The same is true with the milestones of your life. Writing goals down on paper will force you to select specifics and decide what you want.
It will automatically motivate you to take action. Writing goals down is the beginning, but it is not enough. You must execute on your goals. You have to take action. I know that writing down my goals and reviewing them regularly provokes me to take action.
It reveals other opportunities. As you take action and become successful, the more you'll be deluged with possibilities and opportunities. In fact, many times these new opportunities can become distractions if/when you aren't focused on a specific goal. By writing your goals down, you will be able to weigh the new opportunities and see if they're a match.
It helps you overcome resistance and distractions. Every meaningful intention, dream, or goal encounters resistance. Many times when you set a goal, you'll begin to feel its presence. But if you focus on fear, it will only get stronger and move you away from achievement. The way to overcome it is to focus on the written goal—the thing you want.
It will make sure you see and therefore celebrate your success and progress. Life is hard. It is particularly challenging when you're not seeing progress. Without specific goals, you may feel like you are working yourself to death, going nowhere. But when you commit your goals in writing its like mile-markers on a highway. They enable you to see how far you have come and how far you still need to go.
Remember to celebrate every step of the way. Mark the small steps and small little goals as well as the big ones. For example, if you set a goal to close 10 deals, every time you close a deal, its time to make a little mini celebration by buying yourself a small gift or going out to dinner, etc.
For the skeptical ones out there, if your brain is saying to you: "But, can I just know my goals without writing them down?", I suggest to scroll up and reread this post :)
